Planet Jedward
Planet Jedward is the debut studio album by Irish pop duo Jedward. The album was released on July 16, 2010.
Background
The album was released via Absolute Records, a minor subsidiary of the Universal Music Group label. Despite this, the twins' debut single, "Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby)", was released by Sony Music. The album itself consists entirely of cover versions. Following the duo's Eurovision success in May 2011, the album was issued across Europe and Asia in July, this time containing a mixture of tracks from Planet Jedward and previously unheard tracks from the duo's second studio album, Victory. This version of the album also included their Eurovision Song Contest 2011 entry, "Lipstick".
In 2010, the original album was certified double platinum in Ireland,[1] meaning that between 30,000 and 44,999 copies had been sold in the country as of the date of the certification.[2]
Critical reception
The album was universally panned by critics. The Guardian's Caroline Sullivan gave it one out of five stars writing that "it would be stretching a point to say I'd ever want to hear it again."[3] Virgin Media gave zero out of five stars, writing that "Worst (or best depending on your cheese tolerance) of all are the occasional snatches of painfully wooden dialogue before the layers of auto-tuned backing vocalists kick in."[4] The Scotsman gave the album just two stars, calling it "a 35-minute comedy of errors".[5] Yahoo! Music gave the album a 3/10 score saying the album "insults its target audience of reality TV fans and music-loving kids."[6] Sputnikmusic gave the album a score of 1.0 out of 6, calling Jedward "totally and utterly talentless" and the album "the kind of garbage that’s fun when your (sic) about five."[7] Digital Spy gave the album one out of five stars, saying it "contains more crimes against music than the combined discographies of The Cheeky Girls, Phil Collins and Lou Bega", full of "horrible sound effects, vocal echoes and robotic-sounding guitars trampling over millions of music fans' happy memories."[8]
